BIG BEAR LAKE, CALIFORNIA

EAGLE LIVE NEST CAM

Two Eagles, Jackie and Shadow, share a nest on top of a 145 foot Jeffrey Pine tree overlooking Big Bear Lake, California. Jackie laid her first egg on January 25, a second on January 28, and a third on January 31. Mom Jackie will do most of the brooding (incubating) while dad Shadow brings in a fish or two for Jackie to eat and incubates the egg to give Jackie a rest.
Pip watch (first hole in the shell) begins on February 29.

UPDATE: Sadly, it is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually. Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals.

QUESTIONS ABOUT JACKIE & SHADOW

How do you tell Jackie and Shadow apart?
Jackie is larger than Shadow. Jackie’s beak is both longer and thicker from top to bottom than Shadow’s.
How old are the eagles?
Jackie is 12, Shadow is 10.
How can the eagles handle the cold temperatures, snow and rain?
Bald Eagles are well equipped to handle harsh weather conditions. They have down feathers against their skin that can hold in the heat their bodies generate. On top of the down, they have approximately 7000 waterproof feathers that can keep the wet and cold out and also helps keep the heat inside.
Where do the eagles sleep at night and does the light bother them?
During nesting season, Jackie the female sleeps in the nest, Shadow sleeps perched in a tree nearby in case he is needed. The light at the nest is an infrared light, this light cannot be seen by the eagles or humans. It is only picked up by the camera, which enables us to view the nest at night. In the off season, both eagles sleep perched in trees within their territory.
