homework policy

Dear Parents,
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to help the students understand 5th grade content. Therefore, most of the work is being done in class where I can be around for the students when they need help. I don't believe parents should be burdened with helping their children complete homework.
Homework's purpose is to aid the student in achieving classroom and school goals, and it should never be used to punish or merely to keep students busy.
It's debatable that homework load equals academic success. Most of the time, homework sent home is an extension of the learning experience children have during the instruction day. Besides the research reports, not everyone in our class will have the same homework. Some students get extension work, some get reteach practices or reviews, and then there are students who need to complete unfinished work.

At Rio Calaveras, the one consistent homework assigned everyday is the AR reading. All students must read at least 30 minutes. I ask parents to enforce this reading time. As for the rest of the afternoon, I encourage the students to go play outside and then go to bed early. :)
Please read and discuss this homework policy with your child. We can do this – together!
Thank You,
Toan Pham - Your Child's Teacher

what is assigned?

1. Lesson Practice: Students will often get these assignments. This is an extension of work that has been introduced in class. Students practice new concepts and skills presented daily.
2. Remedial Drill: This homework is an individualized drill activity designed to help strengthen your child’s weak areas such as multiplication facts, addition skills, etc.
3. Research/Project: This is work which involves the use of reference materials, i.e. dictionary, internet, books… It is often given on an extended-time basis.
4. Review: This is time spent at home studying and preparing for tests.
5. Unfinished Work: Work is not completed in class.
6. Break Work: Usually offered as extra credit for students during the Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHILD'S HOMEWORK RESPONSIBILITIES?

- Do their best.
- All homework is expected to be neat, not sloppy.
- All written work should be done in pencil
- All homework completely finished by class time the following morning or on the due date.

what is assigned?

In the effort to be more efficient and save the trees, I will assign less paper assignments and more digital homework in which students complete online through sites such as Classting, our Class Website and Google Classroom. Assignments will also be practice with online programs "iReady" and "MobyMax."
If your child is ill but able to do schoolwork at home, I will be happy to prepare the day’s assignments. Please message me through Dojo by the start of the school day to make arrangements for work to be picked up that afternoon or sent digitally. It can be printed out or use a binder paper to do the homework.
Thank you for your help.

HOMEWORK HELP

Usually, students shouldn't have any questions regarding on how to do the homework. However, if questions do arise, please let them ask me through our class website or on Classting.
For parents, please use the "Class Dojo Messaging" to let me know if there are homework questions or any other issues.
