Head-Scratching Mysteries

Can you solve these mysteries that happened in our class?
Each is worth 5 points.

1. Last week, the two Isaiah's played 7 football games. IH won the same number of games as IW. IW lost the same number of games as IH. There were no ties in any of the games. How can you explain this?
ANSWER: Who said that they were playing each other
CORRECT: Kalysta (5), Hadiqa (1), Washington (1)

2. One Friday, after finishing an art project, the Slay Sistas looked at each other. Slay-Melanie had paint all over her face while Slay-Hadiqa's face was clean. Yet, Slay-Hadiqa went and washed her face, but Slay-Melanie did not. Can you explain why the weird Slay Sistas acted this way?
ANSWER: When they had finished the artwork, the Slay-Sistas turned to each other to talk. Slay-Had (clean face) saw that Slay-Mel's face was dirty and assumed that her face would also be dirty, so she went and washed her face. Slay-Mel made the reverse assumption.
WINNERS: Hadiqa (5), Kalysta (1)

3. Salvador got in trouble for chasing his beautiful teacher across the field. So Mr. Pham decided to send him to the office. This means he cannot go on the bowling field trip. However, Mr. Pham gave Salvador a chance to save himself. Salvador was to make a single statement. If it was true, he would be sent to the office. If it was false, he will be fined $500.
What statement did Salvador make that forced Mr. Pham to NOT send him to the office and NOT fine him $500?

ANSWER: Salvador made the statement, "I will be fined $500!" Now, if Mr. Pham fined him $500, his statement will have been true, so he should be sent to the office. But if he is sent to the office, his statement will have been false, so he should be fined $500, then the statement is true...😖
Not knowing what to do, Mr. Pham had to admit that the only fair course of action was to let the 49er-Poop go free!!!
WINNERS: Hadiqa (5), Kalysta (5)

4. Mr. Pham received a note in the PhaMailBox. He read the message but didn't understand it. So he gave it to Kalysta. "It's some sort of code!" said Mr. Pham. "What does it say and who is it from?" Kalysta read the note and burst out laughing. She said, "This is a question from a student in class that kept asking you every day!"
The message read:

EFBS NS. QIBN,
DBO J DBMM ZPV PPHMZ?
GVTJ

Kalysta obviously deciphered the message. Can you?
ANSWER: Each letter in the code represents the letter that it follows in the alphabet. Therefore, the code reads: "DEAR MR. PHAM, CAN I CALL YOU OOGLY? FUSI"
WINNERS: Hadiqa (5), Kalysta (5)

BRAIN TEASER 1 - 2pts.
Mr. Pham traveled to "Workout Camp" last Winter. One morning, he started from his tent and ran south for 2 miles. Then he turned east and ran for 2 miles. He then turned north and ran for another 2 miles, at which point, he was back at the campsite. He saw a bear inside his tent eating all of his diet salad!
What color was the bear? 😝
ANSWER: White *
* The only place you can run (in Mr. Pham's case, walk very slowly) 2 miles south, then east for 2 miles, then north for 2 miles and end up back at your starting point is the North Pole. There are only white polar bears in the north pole.

Picture
Group Earth is trying to figure out a math problem for the Academic Challenge:
In the picture, the big square has an area of 60 square inches. What is the area of the smaller square?
There is a really fast and easy way to find the answer (which does not require algebra). 😁
5 points for the correct answer and another 5 points if you can show what is that fast and easy way.
To answer, pick up a copy of the riddle at the Mail Station, fill out and drop it into "PhaMailbox" when done.

ANSWER: 30 square inches.
The easy answer: If we cut out the smaller square and turn it as shown in the picture. We can see that it is half the size of the big square, as indicated by the dotted lines. These dotted lines divide the large square into 8 triangles, and the small square into 4 triangles.

KRAZY SLICES... and Kids! (6 pts)

3/23/2024

Mr. Pham bought a large pepperoni pizza for lunch one day. But the 6 players on TEAM SIERRA complained that they should get the pizza as a prize because they won the ML CHALLENGE. So Mr. Pham reluctantly divided the pizza into 7 slices and took the biggest slice since he's so muscular and strong, and therefore, needs more food. 💪 Agree?😎
However, these annoying and hungry kids disagreed! They wanted the whole pizza for themselves and ordered Mr. Pham to cut the pizza into 6 SLICES. EACH SLICE to be the SAME SIZE, SAME SHAPE and has the SAME NUMBER of PEPPERONI PIECES on each slice. 🍕
Being very afraid of Kalysta and Jazmine, Mr. Pham followed their orders. But how can he cut the pizza below into 6 IDENTICAL slices each with the SAME number of pepperonis to satisfy these weird kids?
To make this work, the pizza slices should not look like the traditional shape.
Please use your creativity to help out before the Grandmaster gets crushed by Team Sierra.
* Grab a paper pizza at the "Mail Station" and drop into PhaMailbox when you're done slicing.

GEYSER TIMES-5pts.

2/4/2024

Picture
While spending the Winter Break at Yosemite, the "Polar Express" Boys discovered an active geyser (a hot spring of boiling water, shooting a tall column of water and steam into the air at certain times). Yosemite officials named the geyser "Polar Express" for their discovery. The eruptions of this "Polar Express" geyser are very predictable. Below are the last five eruptions:
1. at 12:00 P.M. for five minutes
2. at 12:50 P.M. for six minutes
3. at 1:44 P.M. for seven minutes
4. at 2:42 P.M. for eight minutes
5. at 3:44 P.M. for nine minutes
6. ----- ?
YOUR OBJECTIVE: Using the information given, calculate WHAT TIME and HOW LONG the next eruption will take place.
(Hint: There is a formula. Look for patterns of the duration and time.)

ANSWER:

"Polar Express" geyser next eruption will be at:
4:50 P.M. for 10 minutes
.
The formula used to figure out the time until the next eruption is 4D + 30 minutes, where D is the duration of the last eruption. So...
4 x 9 + 30 = 66 mins or 1:06. Therefore 3:44 + 1:06 = 4:50.

Next week during art time, we will cut snowflakes to decorate the classroom. There are different ways to cut snowflakes. Here's one way:

To cut simple snowflakes, just fold a square piece of paper into fourths, cut shapes, and unfold.
Snowflakes 1-7 were folded into fourths and cut.

QUESTION: Which snowflakes (1-7) will unfold to create snowflakes A, B, and C?  (3 points)

WEIGHT WHAT???

11/25/2023

Using the information given, can you figure out the weight of 49er-Sal, Coconut Mel-Aria, MP (without the weights), and the total weight for all three? 2 points for each correct guess.
Picture
ANSWER:
1. 49er-Sal = 70 lbs (2 points)
2. Coconut Mel-Aria = 30 lbs (2 points)
3. Muscular Pham = 170 lbs (2 points)
4. Total weight of all = 270 lbs (2 points)
EXPLANATION:
MP + 49erSal = 240 lbs. MP + MelAria = 200 lbs. That means 49erSal weighs 40 lbs. more than MelAria.
In pic 1, 49erSal + MelAria = 100 lbs., and 49er-Sal weighs 40 lbs. more (100-40=60). The 60 lbs. is divided into 2 equally. Which means MelAria is 30 lbs. and 49erSal is 30+40=70 lbs.
Since 49erSal is 70 lbs., that means
240-70=170 lbs which will be MP's weight.

Spooky-Dooky Halloween

10/21/2023

At the end of Halloween night, after giving out candies to the creepy and crawly kids, Mr. Pham had less than 20 candies left. He was about to eat them all when the doorbell rang...
When he opened the door, he saw two Spooky Dookies (Spooky Isaiah, Spooky Jonah) asking for treats, so painfully, he divided his candies evenly into two piles, there was one candy leftover.
Suddenly, another Spooky kid came running in, it was Spooky Tyler! So he divided his candies into three even piles, and there was one candy leftover.
Just when he was about to give out the candies, another Spooky kid with funny horns ran to the door. It was Spooky Maleficent! So Mr. Pham divided the candies into four even piles and gave to the kids. Again, there was one candy leftover. So he ate it!
The question is, exactly how many candies Mr. Pham had just BEFORE the Spooky Dookies came to the door? (4 points)
Picture
ANSWER: Mr. Pham had only 13 candies left when the doorbell rang.
13 is one more than 12, which is divisible by two, three and four, and of course, 1 candy will be left over after you divide 12 by 2, by 3, or by 4. :)
